  • Social stratification under tension in a globalized era

    1 December 2000 | Publication

The objective of this paper is to explore the effects of globalization on the labour market and social stratification. It is generally held that globalization will bring about progress for nations and people. This, however, is far from clear, since the experience of almost two decades has been raising increasing doubts about the potential net gains and, particularly, the distribution of such gains. Clearly, there are winners and losers among both countries and people. We will concentrate on the effects upon people within countries and refer only to one region: Latin America. Our aim is to iden…

  • Transnational innovation systems

    1 October 2011 | Publication

This paper discusses the concept of transnational innovation systems (TNIS) and presents some experiences in Europe in the formation of TNIS. The real cases show that supporting the emergence of Transnational Innovation Systems has clear benefits for the countries and the regions involved which may be related to the enlargement of consumer, labour and factor markets, enhanced competition, extended division of labour and increased specialization (Lundquist and Trippl, 2011: 3). Regional integration across borders can therefore be of high importance for small and emerging economies, where resour…

  • The incidence of poverty in Costa Rica between 1987 and 2017: stagnation or reduction?

    31 August 2021 | Publication

According to official data (based on the income poverty line), 20% of households in Costa Rica were poor in 1994, a figure that has apparently not changed substantially since. The poverty level is currently considered to have stagnated at around 20% for more than two decades. However, the way poverty is measured has undergone methodological changes that preclude a strict comparison of the data over time. This study offers a method for dealing with the methodological difficulties and obtaining a set of comparable poverty data for the period from 1987 to 2017. It thereby demonstrates that the le…

  • Job-seeking strategies in Trinidad and Tobago

    1 April 2001 | Publication

National levels of unemployment in Trinidad and Tobago have remained consistently high since the 1980s, because of the economic recession, subsequent structural adjustment arrangements and the diminution of traditional labour-intensive activities such as estate agriculture. Groups which had been dependent upon casual employment that was available in pre-recession times have been experiencing chronic unemployment. Combining extremely irregular casual employment with activity in the informal sector, they occupy a marginal and precarious position in the labour market. This study examines the way …

Deeper analysis of the characteristics and nature of this phenomenon, taking into account that diversity and heterogeneity, is a still pending task that calls for the production of data and information systems able to encompass those various dimensions. This is also a central condition for the design and implementation o…
