In its resolution 590(XXIX) of 2002, ECLAC endorsed the mandate of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and requested the secretariat to organize a regional intergovernmental conference on ageing, for the purpose of formulating a regional strategy for the implementation in Latin America and the Caribbean of the Madrid International Plan of Action of Ageing. The Conference is responsible for implementing and translating the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing into regional action plans and for assessing the progress made and the gaps in the implementation of the Plan of Action in the region.

    Preparatory meeting for the Fifth Regional Intergovernmental Conference on Ageing and the Rights of Older Persons in Latin America and the Caribbean

    Within the framework of the Fifth Intergovernmental Conference on Aging and the Rights of Older Persons to be held in 2022, this preparatory meeting is organized, which aims to present a preliminary content proposal for the preparation of the regional report, report on progress and experiences in the process of preparing national reports on compliance with the Madrid International Plan of Action and addressing aspects related to the organization of the Fifth Regional Intergovernmental Conference on Aging and the Rights of Older People, which will take place in 2022.

    Meeting to present the Guide for the preparation of the country report on the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing

    In order to support the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in the preparation and presentation of their respective national reports, ECLAC, in its role as Technical Secretariat of the Regional Intergovernmental Conference, has prepared a Guide for the preparation of the report of country on the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, which provides some methodological and content guidelines for its preparation. This virtual meeting constitutes an instance for socializing the Guide as well as discussing the modalities of technical assistance to be provided by the Technical Secretariat to countries that request it for the preparation of their respective reports.

    Caribbean preparatory meeting for the Fourth Regional Intergovernmental Conference on Ageing and the Rights of Older Persons

    As set out in Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Resolution 2015/5, the third regional review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (2002) takes place in 2017 to be followed by a global review by the United Nations Commission for Social Development in early 2018. In line with Resolution 2015/5, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will facilitate the review and appraisal exercise within the region.
