(22 April 2013) Statistical experts and authorities from the Member States of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will meet from 24 to 26 April in Pucón, Chile, to discuss relevant issues for the region: multidimensional measurement of poverty and early warning signs and business indicators.

The Twelfth meeting of the Executive Committee of the ECLAC Statistical Conference of the Americas (ECLAC-SCA) is being organized by this regional commission of the United Nations and the Chilean Government (through the National Institute of Statistics, INE).

At the meeting, delegates from participating countries will take part in two substantive seminars on the above-mentioned topics and will give progress reports on the technical working groups that operate in the framework of the Conference, including the global strategy for improving agricultural and rural statistics in Latin America and the Caribbean, initiatives to develop environmental statistics in the region and security and justice statistics.

Participants will also review preparations for the seventh meeting of the ECLAC Statistical Conference of the Americas, scheduled for November 2013.

The meeting will be opened on Wednesday 24 April at 9.00 a.m. at the Gran Hotel de Pucón (Chile) by Pascual Gerstenfeld, Director of the Statistics Division of ECLAC and Andrés Molina, Regional Governor of Araucanía, who will address participants on behalf of the Government of Chile.  Other participants will include Francisco Javier Labbé, Director of Chile's National Institute of Statistics and Fabián Martí, Chair of the SCA and Director of Paraguay's Department of Statistics, Surveys and Censuses.
