27 September 2024|Briefing note

This global data science competition will be held in the city of Medellín from 8 to 11 November 2024, as part of the Fifth World Data Forum. Registration is now open.

The UN Datathon 2024 is a global event sponsored by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), in partnership with the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) of Colombia, the Ruta N Corporation - Medellín, the Mayor's Office of Medellín - Special District of Science, Technology and Innovation, the United Nations Regional Big Data Hub in Brazil, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Global Data Partnership for Sustainable Development (GPSDD), Amazon Web Services (AWS), Esri and the United Nations Major Group for Youth and Children (UN-MGCY), and seeks to develop participants' skills to find ideas and solutions based on specific identified challenges.

The 2024 edition of this global competition will challenge participants to locate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the urban level, with a focus on the sustainable development of cities. Teams will be expected to address three key themes: sustainable tourism, urban waste management, and circular economy. They are expected to present innovative data-driven solutions that balance economic growth, environmental preservation, and community well-being.

Participation

Participants are expected to be linked to National Statistical Offices (NSOs) or National Statistical Systems (NSSs) - with partial funding if they come from developing countries - as well as to academic institutions, research centers, or think tanks. Self-funded teams may also participate, provided they commit to having at least two members present in Medellín.
