Citizen Science: Opportunities for Libraries and Societal Actors

The open science webinar in June explored the potential for libraries to actively engage in citizen science highlighting the value of public participation in research projects.

Thomas Kaarsted, the Deputy Library Director at the University of Southern Denmark s emphasized the potential of citizen science in addressing global problems that lack straightforward solutions. He highlighted the importance of involving the public in research projects through dialogue and actively incorporating their contributions. Kaarsted discussed the role libraries can play in promoting citizen science and offered recommendations, along with showcasing successful project examples. 

In addition to the presentation from Kaarsted, Paul Ayris, Pro-Vice-Provost at the University College London and former chair of LIBER’s Citizen Science Working Group elaborated on the topics discussed and shared his rich experience from citizen science.
