The event was organized by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency of Brazil) and the Energy Transition Working Group of Relop (Association of Energy Regulators of Portuguese-speaking Countries) to generate spaces for dialogue between electricity regulators from countries with the same language.

On this occasion, Ms. Rayén Quiroga, Head of the Water and Energy Unit, shared a presentation on the 2030 Agenda, SDG 7 and the energy transition in Latin America and the Caribbean.

ECLAC shared that it has identified sectors with high potential for transforming production and development models in Latin American and Caribbean countries, among which energy transition is one of the main ones. He therefore proposed five pillars for simultaneous action to promote this energy transition in LAC countries: (i) universalizing access to electricity based on renewable energies, leaving no one behind and reducing energy poverty; (ii) increasing the share of renewable energies in the energy matrix; (iii) improving energy efficiency in all sectors of economic activity, particularly transportation, manufacturing and households; (iv) strengthening complementarity, integration and interconnection between the region's energy systems; and, (v) increasing regional energy security and resilience in the face of external shocks.

In addition, the relationship of these pillars with SDG 7 ("Ensure access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy for all") and with other SDGs of the 2030 Agenda was presented.

Comments from participants highlighted the need to strengthen coordinated regulations to internalize the relationships between SDG 7 and the other SDGs, and highlighted the case of energy poverty which links SDG 7, and in particular target 7.1 ("Ensure access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy") with SDG 1 ("End poverty in all its forms").  In this regard, Brazil and Portugal presented their progress in energy poverty policies and social tariffs.
