26 September 2020|Event

The period for signature of the Escazú Agreement will close on 26 September 2020, pursuant to article 21 of the treaty.

Due to the current exceptional circumstances, the Treaty Section of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs has indicated that no Treaty Event will be organized on the occasion of the General Debate of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

However, signatures of the Escazú Agreement might be possible at United Nations Headquarters in New York but only under strict conditions carefully designed to guarantee the health and safety of representatives of Member States and Staff Members of the Organization.

Practical information

Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean wishing to sign the Escazú Agreement may make arrangements through their Permanent Mission to the United Nations and the issuing of the corresponding full powers.

Confirmation should be sent to the Treaty Section (e-mail: treatysection@un.org), copying the Secretariat of the Escazú Agreement (secretaria.escazu@cepal.org), as soon as possible.
