Se implementó exitosamente la primera edición de las “Jornadas de la Alianza Digital UE-ALC” en Cartagena, Colombia, celebradas del 27 al 29 de noviembre de 2023
Since 1980, the Strategic Alliance between the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany has aimed at contributing to sustainable development by closing social, economic, and environmental development gaps, as well as contributing to regional integration in Latin America and the Caribbean. Over the years both partners increased their efforts towards the common goal by consolidating their cooperation in a Strategic Alliance in late 2003. The cooperation is implemented by teams from ECLAC and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and currently has the following projects:
- Inclusive, sustainable and smart cities in the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean
- Recover Better: Overcoming the consequences of the COVID19 pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean
- Regional Cooperation for the Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources in the Andean Region (MinSus)
In addition, the Strategic Alliance hosts global projects of both BMZ and other international cooperation organizations, which are implemented by GIZ and have ECLAC as a regional strategic partner for their execution. Examples of this are:
The alliance promotes political and expert dialogues between both regions also on cross-cutting issues such as feminist development cooperation policies and the consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine, for which it has specific funding from donator BMZ.
ECLAC's official mandate is to contribute to, and coordinate actions aimed at the economic and social development of Latin America as well as to promote and strengthen the economic relations of countries among themselves and with other countries of the world. Its work has been extended to Caribbean countries and the goal of promoting social development has been incorporated.
Thanks to its recognition in the region, ECLAC is a relevant catalyst for processes of change. It moderates different policy orientations, organizes high-level political dialogues and exchanges between countries, and between politics and the private sector, thus promoting regional learning and placing innovative issues on the regional development agenda. According to United Nations resolution 700 (XXXVI), ECLAC is mandated to coordinate the follow-up and review process of the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the region in order to achieve the maximum possible coherence with other international agreements, such as the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The Strategic Alliance:
- contributes to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the region and to the implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change, in order to support compliance with NDCs (Nationally Determined Contributions) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- works hand in hand with public, civil society, academia and private sector organizations at national, regional and local levels.
- provides a bridge between the regions of Latin America and the Caribbean, and Germany and Europe, through regional platforms for political dialogue, events or exchanges of experience by mobilizing the knowledge of experts from the most diverse topical areas to achieve measurable impacts that can bring about changes towards sustainable development.
