Round table on Principle 10 regional agreement takes place at the 21st Brazilian Congress on Environmental Law

In the framework of the 21st Brazilian Congress on Environmental Law “Planeta Verde”, held in Sao Paulo from 4 to 8 June 2016, ECLAC participated in a Round Table on Principle 10 entitled "Proposal of Regional Convention and Case Law.”

In the framework of the 21st Brazilian Congress on Environmental Law “Planeta Verde”, held in Sao Paulo from 4 to 8 June 2016, ECLAC participated in a Round Table on Principle 10 entitled "Proposal of Regional Convention and Case Law.”

The Round Table was moderated by the Senior State Attorney of the Court of Rio Grande do Sul, Silvia Cappelli and composed of: Andrea Brusco, Legal Officer of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); Guillermo Acuña, Legal Advisor of the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC); Joara Marchezini, Project Officer on Access to Information of Article 19, Brazil; Marío Gustavo Mottin, General Coordinator for Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil; and Rubens Born, Expert Researcher of the Grupo Esquel Foundation of Brazil. 

The representative of ECLAC presented the developments and challenges of the regional agreement on Principle 10, including the background and synergies with other forums and processes, such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the recently created Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of capacity-building and cooperation from a South-South cooperation perspective.
