Countries of the region debate on the construction of green indicators for enterprises

Representatives from ten countries met to discuss the construction of indicators for identifying how enterprises in Latin America and the Caribbean develop their productive processes and link them with environmental aspects.

The second workshop on green indicators for enterprises, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 5-7 April 2016.

During the workshop, representatives of offices and national institutes of statistics of Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, the Dominican Republic ,Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, and Peru discussed a set of key indicators on green production and the main questionnaire for the collection of statistical information on environmental practices in enterprises. Both instruments are fundamental to the design of policies that promote more sustainable patterns of production.

During the first day of the event, the representatives discussed the importance of measurement for the design and monitoring of green production policies. The experiences of Brazil and Mexico were presented, as well as the methodologies and statistics practices of industrial surveys in Latin America and the Caribbean. Subsequently, the methodological, conceptual and thematic discussion of the proposal of the module on green production and its indicators began, covering the other two days of the workshop.

The event was held in the framework of the project Towards a set of indicators for  greener production, which was presented during the workshop. This project is led by ECLAC and the International Research Centre for Development (IDRC), with the participation of 11 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It aims to build capacities to promote the design and collection of harmonized indicators on sustainable production and the incorporation of green technologies in enterprises in Latin America and the Caribbean.
