Seminar-workshop "The 2010 Census and the Inclusion of an Ethnic Approach"

The general objective is to contribute to the inclusion of the ethnic approach in the 2010 census round processes through the participation of afro descendants and indigenous peoples. The specific objectives are to update the situation concerning the way countries of the region have included the identification of ethnic groups in population and housing censuses, to strengthen the participation and the inter-cultural dialogue in the census process, to establish agreements concerning the conceptual and operational aspects of the ethnic group identification criteria, to encourage a regional work plan for the development of technical capacities and methodologies. The aim is to produce and analyze statistical information of ethnic groups and institutionalize the ethnic subjects in national statistics systems with the participation of afro descendants and indigenous peoples.

The specific objectives were to update the state of the art regarding how the countries of the region have included the identification of ethnic groups in population and housing censuses; to strengthen intercultural participation and dialogue in the census process; to reach a consensus about the conceptual and operative aspects of the identification criteria for ethnic groups; to put forth a regional work plan for the development of technical and methodological capabilities that will enable the creation and analysis of statistical information for other ethnic groups; and to promote the institutionalization of ethnic matters in national statistical systems with Indigenous and Afrodescendent participation.
