Regional Seminar "Institutional and statistical challenges for the monitoring of the Millenium Development Goals in Latin American and Caribbean countries"

One of the objectives of the meeting, organized by ECLAC, is to coordinate information efficiently between local sources and international institutions.

The meeting brought  together, for the first time, directors of National Statistics Offices from around the region, the authorities responsible for MDG National Reports, and representatives of international agencies.

Analysis of statistical discrepancies of the MDG indicators among national and international sources.

Actions to reduce these divergences Moderator: ECLAC Updated assessment of statistical discrepancies in MDG indicator values among those presented by national sources and those used by international agencies, emphasizing the main factors that explain the differences in general.

Institutional strengthening and inter-institutional coordination in the elaboration of MDG national reports

Moderator: National Planning Department, Colombia

  • Discussion about the process of statistical production and MDG monitoring, as well of the inter-institutional coordination dynamics to facilitate both the quality, collection and use of statistical information at the country level. It will be important to identify good practices and experiences that can improve the processes of developing MDG indicators to reinforce the analysis in the MDG’s national reports.

Guidelines for future work on monitoring the MDGs

Moderators: ECLAC and National Statistical Department, Colombia

  • Discussion on the challenges and work to be carried out by the different actors (statistical offices, national report leaders, UN system agencies) regarding interinstitutional coordination and the development of countries-agencies statistical convergence, in order to strengthen national and regional capacities for monitoring MDGs.
