The tenth version of the event will be chaired by Colombian economist José Antonio Ocampo.

(11 April 2011) The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will hold two events in memory of one of its founders, the Argentine economist and former Executive Secretary Raúl Prebisch.

The tenth memorial lecture in his name will be held on Tuesday 12 April, and will be led by José Antonio Ocampo, Columbia University Professor and ECLAC Executive Secretary from January 1998 to August 2003.

Mr. Ocampo, who was United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs until mid-2007, will be speaking on "Macroeconomics for development: countercyclical policies and changing production patterns".

This renowned economist is the author of many books and articles on macroeconomic policy and theory, economic development, international trade and economic history.

The Raúl Prebisch Memorial Lecture was set up in April 2001, on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Raúl Prebisch. Major figures from Latin American economics have taken part in the event.

On Wednesday 13 April, the current Executive Secretary of ECLAC, Alicia Bárcena, will present the book The Life and Times of Raúl Prebisch, 1901-1986 by Edgar J. Dosman.

In this biography of the renowned Argentine economist, the author analyses his main writings and includes interviews with his inner circle. The book therefore provides an accomplished portrait of someone who many describe as one of the main Latin American thinkers of the twentieth century.
