The training mission on circular economy in the water and sanitation sector took place in Bogotá, D.C., on November 15, 2023. The workshop was organized by ECLAC and the CRA and covered topics such as the sustainable transition of water, methane management, and nutrient recovery. It featured sessions led by distinguished experts and was attended by senior executives from national-level public service providers, regional corporations, and national entities related to water and sanitation.

The workshop organized by the Conference of Ibero-American Water Directors (CODIA) took place from October 30 to November 1, 2023, in Montevideo, Uruguay. The workshop focused on water quality, wastewater management, and wastewater valorization in Latin America. It addressed pressing issues related to water quality and wastewater in the region, including the lack of adequate sewage systems, industrial and agricultural pollution, and the importance of wastewater treatment and valorization.

During the Latin America and the Caribbean Climate Week 2023 (LACCW 2023), ECLAC, in collaboration with UNICEF and SIWI, organized the parallel event titled "Water and Sanitation in the Context of Climate Change," with the motto of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for the most vulnerable in the context of climate change. The event highlighted the challenges related to water and sanitation in the context of climate change, particularly the vulnerabilities of populations in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Prominent experts contributed from their various fields of expertise to gain a comprehensive understanding of the current situation in the region.

Through this event, ECLAC joined the conversation about the importance of sanitation and its vital link to economic, social, and environmental development.

During the 65th Meeting of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America, the relevance of the connections between this conference and other ECLAC bodies was emphasized. The role of water in gender equity was highlighted, identifying four gaps and promoting specific investments, execution with a gender perspective and inclusive monitoring, in accordance with the Regional Action Agenda for Water.

With excellent attendance, on Friday, September 29th, the first virtual seminar of the ROSA network was held, composed of founding countries: Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Panama, and the Dominican Republic. The seminar took place in synergy with the Conference of Ibero-American Water Directors (CODIA), the Cooperation Fund for Water and Sanitation (FCAS), and the Center for the Study and Experimentation of Public Works in Spain (CEDEX). The seminar was part of the Third Session of the Virtual Course "Sectoral Policy and Planning for Sanitation and Wastewater Treatment," specifically in the second module focusing on "Development of the Regulatory, Institutional, and Financial Framework of the Sanitation Sector in LAC." The event had the participation of more than 114 connected people, including all the focal points of the countries in the ROSA project network.

Undeniably, Panama has taken a decisive step to support the sustainable use of transboundary water resources, becoming the first country in Latin America to adhere to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe - UNECE. Panama's adoption into this convention marks a regional milestone and underscores its leadership in environmental protection and the promotion of a sustainable economy.

Between July 3 and 4, Dr Silvia Saravia Matus, ECLAC's Economic Affairs Officer of the Water and Energy Unit, participated in a training session held at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) headquarters in Geneva. The training session aimed to increase awareness and adherence to the Water Convention and the application of its principles, based on the benefits of cooperation from the Convention's 2022-2024 work program.

The regional infrastructure seminar was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on June 6-7. Experts, policy makers and relevant stakeholders met to discuss crucial issues such as the integration of suburban areas, achieving a sovereign and sustainable energy matrix, actions for a rational, integral and equitable management of water resources, and promoting regional integration and cooperation.

On Thursday, April 27th, the first meeting of the 6th forum on SDG 6 - Clean water and sanitation, took place. This meeting served as a space for reflection and exchange of experiences on issues related to water resource management. A variety of actors, both from the public and private sectors, had space to share their thoughts. Countries also shared their vision on SDG 6 and what is being done to reach the 2030 goals. Important topics such as drought, floods, water financing, and governance were highlighted throughout the session.
