It is convened under the auspices of ECLAC and guided by the principles established for all follow-up and review processes by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in September 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly.

When the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all 193 Member States of the United Nations at the Sustainable Development Summit in New York in September 2015 as “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future”, it presented a historic opportunity for Latin America and the Caribbean. Despite progress, the region needs to step up their efforts.

Prior to the pandemic, education in the region was already facing significant inclusion and quality challenges. Hence, it is necessary to take advantage of the opportunity not only to recover but also to transform the region's education systems.
