Professor at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Ricardo Hausmann, will visit the main headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile on Thursday, September 28, where he will give a keynote lecture and be received by José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary.
The renowned economist – founder and Director of Harvard University’s Growth Lab – will deliver a speech entitled “How can high, sustained, sustainable and inclusive growth be achieved?”
The presentation, which will begin at 11 a.m. local time in Chile (UTC/GMT -3), is part of a Keynote Lecture Series organized to commemorate ECLAC’s 75th anniversary.
Holding a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University, Ricardo Hausmann is an expert on research topics that include economic growth, macroeconomic stability, international finance and the social dimensions of development.
Since launching the Growth Lab in 2006, Hausmann has led more than 50 research initiatives in nearly 30 countries, informing development policy, growth strategies, and diversification agendas at the national and subnational levels.
Before joining Harvard University, Hausmann served as the first Chief Economist of the Inter-American Development Bank (1994-2000), where he created the Research Department. He also served as Minister of Planning of Venezuela (1992-1993) and as a member of the Board of that country’s Central Bank.
In addition, he served as Chair of the International Monetary Fund-World Bank Development Committee, and as an economics professor at the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administracion (IESA) (1985-1991) in Caracas, where he founded the Center for Public Policy.
ECLAC’s Keynote Lecture Series began on July 24 with a presentation by Arancha González Laya, Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) at the Paris Institute of Political Studies (Sciences Po), while August 18 marked the turn of renowned Colombian economist and former ECLAC Executive Secretary, José Antonio Ocampo. Subsequently, on September 4, Aloizio Mercadante, President of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), gave a presentation on “The role of development banks in the transformation of the Latin American development model.” In this series taking place through February 2024, other prominent thinkers will visit the Commission’s headquarters in Santiago to present their views and ideas about the challenges facing the world and the region. Dag Hammarskjöld 3477, Vitacura, Santiago, Chile). The lecture will feature simultaneous interpretation to Spanish, English and Portuguese.
