Wikipedia edit-a-thon shines light on ECLAC Building

It was organized by the Hernán Santa Cruz Library in collaboration with Wikimedia Chile. The purpose was to write a Wikipedia article in Spanish on the distinct architecture of the ECLAC Headquarters building in Santiago, Chile.

The event coincided with Chile's Cultural Heritage Day (Día del Patrimonio Cultural de Chile), which takes place on the last Sunday of May.

The ECLAC Headquarters was inaugurated on 29 August 1966 by Secretary-General U Thant and the President of Chile, Eduardo Frei Montalva. The building is considered a landmark of modern Latin American architecture.

It was designed by architect Emilio Duhart, in collaboration with Christian de Groote, Roberto Goycoolea and Oscar Santelices, who were inspired by the style of the famous French urban designer Le Corbusier.

During the edit-a-thon, both Eduardo Lyon, Head of the General Services Section, and Andrés Venegas, of the Administration Division, spoke about past maintenance practices and future building projects. They highlighted efforts to create a clean, energy efficient work environment.

"Our mandate is to deliver quality information every day and this is an opportunity to work on a symbol of our identity,” said Wouter Schallier, Head of the ECLAC Library.

He added that the initiative promotes access to information to empower people in accordance with the 2030 Agenda.

Wikipedia is the largest and most popular general reference work on the World Wide Web.
