ECLAC and Partners Publish Document on Climate Change Impact Analysis Methodologies for Food and Nutritional Security

“Climate Change and Food and Nutrition Security in Central America and the Dominican Republic: Methodological Proposals” was published in the ECLAC repository. This document is based on the recommendations from the work group from the expert meeting on food and nutrition security challenges and opportunities in countries from the Central American Integration System (SICA) organized by the Executive Secretariat of the Central American Agricultural Council (SE-CAC), ECLAC, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Regional Food and Nutrition Security Program for Central America (PRESANCA) in July 2015. ECLAC and SE-CAC presented a proposal to the Regional Technical Committee (CTR) in September 2015 that consisted in developing proposed methodologies and initial analysis on the potential impacts of climate change in the different dimensions of food and nutrition security and in the chain of activity that makes up the agro-food system in SICA countries.

To write the document, the different institutions of the Interagency Support Group (GIA) convened to participate in developing the proposed methodologies. The institutions that participated in this publication are Information Systems Program for Food and Nutrition Security Resilience in the SICA region (PROGRESAN), the Central America and Panama Nutrition Institute (INCAP), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security Program (CCAFS/CIAT) and FAO. In May 2017, a meeting was held where the institutions presented their proposals and made recommendations and future lines of actions with national food and nutrition security institutions to work on this topic, the meeting was financially supported by the Interamerican Development Bank (IBD) and the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) within the scope of project Rg-X1107 that supported phase III of ECC CARD.

The objectives of this work include visualizing the topic of the impact of climate change on food and nutrition security in all of its components so as to have better structured policies on this topic and to join and coordinate the efforts of different institutions to jointly issue recommendations with different visions.
