14 April 2014|News

"The sessions are ECLAC's most significant event because they gather together all its Member States and Associate Members to analyze the situation in Latin America and the Caribbean," Antonio Prado, Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations organization, said during an informational meeting with ambassadors held this Monday, April 14, in Santiago, Chile.

This was the last meeting of its kind before the Thirty-fifth session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which will take place May 5-9 in Lima, Peru. The previous informational meetings were held in the Peruvian capital on March 20 and in New York on April 8, with the participation of ambassadors from the Commission's Member States and Associate Member countries.

During the event in Santiago, Antonio Prado gave details on the upcoming session's provisional agenda and on how the gathering is being organized.

The senior official informed participants that in Lima ECLAC will present the document Compacts for Equality: Towards a Sustainable Future, which is part of a trilogy focused on equality that includes the books Structural Change for Equality: An Integrated Approach to Development  (2012) and Time for Equality: Closing Gaps, Opening Trails (2010).

The meeting was also attended by ECLAC's Chief of the Programme Planning and Operations Division, Raúl García-Buchaca; the Officer-in-Charge of the Secretary of the Commission, Luis F. Yáñez, and Peru's Ambassador in Chile, Carlos Pareja.

ECLAC's sessions are held every two years and draw delegates from its 44 Member States and 12 Associate Members, as well as representatives of the United Nations system and non-governmental organizations. At this event, participants evaluate the activities carried out by the organization in the previous two years and approve the work agenda for the next biennium.
