International migration is a key item on the agenda of Latin American and Caribbean countries. There needs to be a debate that contributes to the formulation of regional and international policies and agreements, for the benefit of countries and with respect for migrant rights.
These concerns were discussed at the Latin American and Caribbean regional meeting on international migration in preparation for the high-level dialogue on international migration and development, which was organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA - LACRO), in Santiago, Chile, on 10 and 11 July 2013.
At the meeting, experts discussed topics from the United Nations High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development, which will be held during the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Its main theme will be the identification of concrete measures to strengthen coherence and cooperation aimed at promoting the benefits of international migration and reducing its negative impacts.
The main objective of the regional meeting was to discuss the current interaction between migration and human rights and development, with emphasis on a Latin American and Caribbean vision to boost policymaking and agreements in this area.
The meeting was opened by representatives from ECLAC and IOM, and was divided into four round table discussions that will examine the effects of international migration on sustainable development, measures intended to ensure respect for the human rights of all migrants, strengthening cooperation and particular characteristics of the region.
After the meeting, ECLAC and OIM will be responsible for producing a report to be submitted to the High-level dialogue in October 2013 in New York.
