The government of the Republic of Korea and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) strengthened today their strategic cooperation relationship by signing an agreement that promotes sustainable development on three crucial issues for the transformative recovery of our region’s countries.

The 2022 cooperation accord – signed by Kyungtae Hwang, the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador in Chile, and José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC – will enable continued support for regional economic trade integration, with special emphasis on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises through the CORPYME program and the implementation of a second phase of activities for strengthening open e-government, and will also support the development of digitalization in Latin America and the Caribbean.

During the meeting held at the Commission’s central headquarters in Santiago, Chile, ECLAC’s Executive Secretary expressed his satisfaction and gratitude to the Ambassador for the support that the Republic of Korea has provided to the organization’s substantive work. Meanwhile, the Korean diplomat reaffirmed his government’s intention to continue collaborating with ECLAC and to forge even closer ties in the coming years.

The Republic of Korea became a Member State of ECLAC on July 23, 2007 and its Prime Minister, Han Duck-soo, gave a keynote lecture on October 11, 2022 at ECLAC’s headquarters.
