Over the next twenty years, the Caribbean* will see a rapid and dramatic ageing of its population. With such a rapid increase in the number of older persons on the horizon, there is an urgent need for governments to strengthen social protection against a wide range of risks that older people face. * -Here the Caribbean refers to Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Curaçao, Dominica; Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Sant Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sint Maarten, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands and the United States Virgin Islands.

There is growing concern over young people in the region who remain excluded from two fundamental institutions for social inclusion: education and employment, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) warns.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, 80% of the population lives in cities. The urbanization process has contributed to the region’s economic and social development. At the same time, cities reflect the poverty and inequality that still persist and they are the battleground for efforts to stop environmental degradation. ECLAC contends that each city’s development model must ensure its economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Despite the rapid incorporation of women into the labor market since the 1970s, inequalities remain in the quality of jobs and access to them. In the region this is clearly manifested in the limited presence of women in executive positions at major companies. ECLAC reviewed the situation of 72 such businesses.
