The Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Alicia Bárcena, will participate this week in distinct sessions of the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2020, where she will address issues such as the persistence of inequality and social discontent in the region, as well as the scope of the Comprehensive Development Plan for El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and south-southeastern Mexico, among other matters.
The World Economic Forum’s annual meeting will take place on January 21-24, 2020 in the Swiss city of Davos under the theme of “Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World.” The gathering will bring together leaders from the business sector, government, international organizations, academia and civil society from throughout the world.
This year, Bárcena will take part in different discussion panels regarding regional and global trends.
On Tuesday, January 21, the senior United Nations representative will be one of the presenters at a session entitled Strategic Outlook: Latin America, along with the President of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno; the Economy Minister of Mexico, Graciela Márquez; the Economy Minister of Brazil, Paulo Guedes; the President of YPF and the Argentine government’s special envoy to WEF 2020, Guillermo Nielsen; and the Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Angel Gurría.
This panel, which will be transmitted live between 2:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. Davos time, will address the domestic pressures that governments in Latin America face and the challenges for attaining a sustainable, prosperous and secure future in the region.
On Wednesday, January 22, Alicia Bárcena will speak on a panel that will analyze the outlook for emerging markets in 2020 in a context in which foreign direct investment is at its lowest level since the 1990s. The session, entitled Strategic Outlook: Emerging Markets, will be transmitted live between 1 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. local time.
Meanwhile, on the morning of Thursday, January 23, Bárcena will act as moderator of the Country Strategy Dialogue on Mexico, where she will address the Comprehensive Development Plan for El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and south-southeast Mexico, which ECLAC is coordinating at the behest of these four countries.
That afternoon, she will participate in a session entitled How to Turn Protest into Progress, where she will refer to the antigovernment protests that have taken place in some countries of the region and the world against entrenched inequality, corruption and political repression, and to how social movements can move from protest to political change in an effective way. This gathering will be transmitted live from 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Davos time.
In the context of her participation in the World Economic Forum 2020, Alicia Bárcena will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with representatives of the public and private sectors at a global level.
