Costa Rica Forum on Data Roadmaps for Sustainable Development

The Forum aims to bring together stakeholders across sectors of the country, to discuss and define the way forward for the achievement of the formulation of a roadmap for the generation of data for sustainable development.

In association with the Global Partnership  for Sustainable Development Data (GPSDD), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Strategic Thinking Center (CEPEI, Centro de Pensamiento Estratégico), the Government of Costa Rica organizes this National Forum to contribute to the formulation of a roadmap for the generation of data for sustainable development.

The objective of this forum is to design a data roadmap that supports the efforts made by the country to the accomplishment of the SDGs through intersectoral and inter-institutional work. The aims to identify the main challenges in terms of data, technology, policies, resources and capacity, with the objective of supporting the development of a data ecosystem approach, led and aligned with national priorities and involving all interested parties.

Agenda subjects:

  1. The national strategy for the implementation of the SDGs including challenges and opportunities.
  2. Data availability for SDG’s indicators including gaps and opportunities.
  3. Data roadmaps  for sustainable  development and country experiences from Colombia, Mexico, Philippines and Ghana.
  4. Leave no one behind:  the importance of data disaggregation.
  5. Forum on administrative data.
  6. Open data, geospatial and earth observations and new data sources.
  7. Policy and enabling environment.
  8. The roadmap forward.

This session will consist of 4 meeting groups. Each group will be assigned one of the following topics to focus their discussion on:

a) Administrative data and data disaggregation

b) Governance and leadership: regulation, coordination and collaboration for the availability of data under a multi-stakeholder approach

c) Development of capacities and resources needed to move towards a data ecosystem

d) Data and technology innovation: addressing data gaps, new data sources and necessary technologies

Cada grupo discutirá las siguientes preguntas:

1) From what you have heard and discussed during the last two days, where do you think Costa Rica currently is in terms of its overall advancement?

2) What are the key problems facing Costa Rica in relation to the focus area of your group?

3) Based on the problems you have identified; how would you prioritize them?

4) Are there any other major issues, challenges or opportunities that were not brought up during the workshop that you would like to identify?

A representative of each group inform to the plenary about what was discussed in their groups. Representatives are expected to report on the perceived baseline, priority areas of action and new issues that require further exploration.
