Dani Rodrik, Professor at Harvard University will Deliver the Fifth Raúl Prebisch Memorial Lecture

(29 August 2005) Dani Rodrik, professor of international political economy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University (United States), will deliver the Fifth Raúl Prebisch Memorial Lecture, entitled "Policies for Economic Diversification?"

The talk will take place on Wednesday 31 August 2005, at 4 pm, at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile (Av. Dag Hammarskjöld 3477, Vitacura, Raúl Prebisch Conference Room). José Luis Machinea, ECLAC Executive Secretary, will welcome everyone and introduce this distinguished academic.

Professor Rodrik holds a Ph.D. in economics and an MPA in International Development from Princeton. He has worked extensively in the fields of international economics, economic development and political economy. His research has focused on what constitutes good economic policy and why some governments are better than others at adopting it. His most recent research has focused on the determinants of economic growth and the consequences of international economic integration.

His main publications include: Has Globalization Gone Too Far? (1997, "one of the most important economics books of the decade," according to Business Week); In Search of the Holy Grail: Policy Convergence, Experimentation, and Economic Performance (with Sharum Mukand, American Economic Review, March 2005); Democracies Pay Higher Wages (Quarterly Journal of Economics, August 1999); and Why Do More Open Economies Have Bigger Governments? (Journal of Political Economy, October 1998). Professor Rodrikis also an editor of the Review of Economics and Statistics and associate editor of Journal of Economic Literature.

ECLAC's Raúl Prebisch Memorial Lecture Series was created in 2001, to mark the hundredth anniversary of the birth of this Argentine economist, who served as Executive Secretary of this regional United Nations commission from 1950 to 1963.

Prebisch exercised a decisive influence on the ideas and paths for development taken by Latin America and the Caribbean and he contributed to the United Nations' work to achieve a fairer international order. To date, these Memorial Lectures have been given by the Brazilian economist Celso Furtado (2001), the Nobel Prizewinner (economics) Joseph Stiglitz (2002), the former president of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso (2003), and the former UNCTAD Secretary-General, Rubens Ricupero (2004).

On 1 - 2 September, Professor Rodrik will speak at the seminar, Economic Growth with Equity, organized by ECLAC, to be held on the premises of this regional United Nations commission, in Santiago, Chile.
