The COVID-19 pandemic will result in Latin America and the Caribbean’s worst economic and social crisis in decades, with damaging effects on growth, poverty, employment and the reduction of inequality. In the medium-term, this crisis will also provoke structural changes in the organization of production, in the labor market, and in the financial and international trade systems. In this context, policies to keep the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on track are more essential than ever, especially to build back more resilient and inclusive societies in the post-pandemic phase.
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations are pleased to invite government representatives and other actors who participate in the virtual proceedings of the 2020 High-level Political Forum for Sustainable Development to engage in an interactive dialogue to take stock of the socioeconomic impact of the pandemic in Latin America and the Caribbean and discuss the policy responses to accelerate the region’s efforts to build back better while making progress towards the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as we enter the Decade of Action. Additionally, some time will be devoted to examining the role of ECLAC in support of the UN Comprehensive Response to COVID-19.
