Preparatory meeting of the XIII Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean with Caribbean countries

The preparatory meeting of the XIII Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean with Caribbean countries is convened In accordance with the agreement of the fifthly-third meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean, which was held in Santiago, Chile on 26-29 January 2016.

The Regional Conference on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean is a subsidiary Organ of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The Conference is convened on a regular basis in order to identify the needs of women at the regional and subregional levels, carry out periodic reviews of activities that comply with regional and international agreements, provide a forum for the discussion of these issues and put forward recommendations for the national Governments of the region.

The Caribbean subregional preparatory meeting will feature presentations on the preparation for the XIII Regional Conference, and will include a status update on the position document for the conference, as well as discussion on the challenges faced in the implementation of the regional gender agenda. 

The preparatory meeting will take place in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, and will be preceeded by a technical meeting to examine the economic autonomy of women in the Caribbean. The technical meeting will focus on the situation of women, with particular attention given to economic empowerment and gender equality with a view to highlighting the opportunities offered by the 2030 Global Agenda for Sustainable Development in advancing the economic autonomy of women in the Caribbean. It will provide a forum to examine critical issues which should be addressed if we are to achieve gender equality and women’s economic empowerment during the next 15 years.
