América Latina y el Caribe es el epicentro de la pandemia por Covid-19. Al 8 de julio sumaba 3.045.940 de casos confirmados, que representan 0,47% de la población total de la región, 133.002 defunciones (4,4 % de los casos confirmados) y 1.810.437 recuperados (59,4% de los casos confirmados) (PAHO, 2020). Apenas cuatro meses después del primer caso detectado en la región (por Brasil el 25 de febrero de 2020), la pandemia ya presenta grandes retos económicos y sociales.
